QLD: Logging stats cited by Democrats flawed: Timber Board

The Queensland Timber Board says figures used by Democrats Senator ANDREW BARTLETT in an
attack on the timber industry are misleading.

On Wednesday, the Democrats environment spokesman said more than 80 per cent of
Queenslanders want an end to native forest logging.

He called for Premier PETER BEATTIE to stick to an election commitment to end such logging.

But timber board general manager ROD MCINNES says Senator BARTLETT has cited flawed
statistics from a random survey of residents across the south-east Queensland Regional
Forestry Agreement area.

Mr MCINNES says the survey did not specify whether the native forest being discussed was
Crown, private or national park.

He says people responding that they wanted an end to logging may have thought they were
being asked if logging should be allowed in national parks.
