Swm: Sullivan sets pace in chase for 100m gold

EAMON SULLIVAN burned off his rivals in the 100m freestyle heats last night .. and
then warned he has plenty of fuel left in the tank to chase Olympic gold.

The Australian world record holder motored into today's semi-finals by clocking the
fastest time of 47.80 seconds .. maintaining his gold medal favouritism.

His time would have been enough to win gold at every previous international meet ..

while the sizzling heat speeds last night were such that IAN THORPE'S 2004 Athens bronze
medal time of 48.56 would not have qualified for the semi-finals.

Swede STEFAN NYSTRAND was second quickest at 47.83 .. followed by Canadian dark horse
BRENT HAYDEN with 47.84 seconds.

American relay star JASON LEZAK and Italy's 2007 world champion FILIPPO MAGNINI also
eased through .. while another Australian MATT TARGETT qualified 12th.
