FED:Gay marriage ridicule damages youths
Marriage equality advocates have condemned comments that same-sex marriage will allow
unions between paedophiles and children.
They have called for organisers of a pro-marriage rally where conservative American
commentator REBECCA HAGELIN made the statement to do the same.
The rally in Canberra, organised by the Australian Christian Lobby and the Australian
Family Association, heard from a handful of federal MPs including Queensland independent
BOB KATTER.
Mr Katter told the gathering of several hundred people the proposition of gay marriage
deserves to be laughed at and ridiculed, but Australian Marriage Equality spokesman RODNEY
CROOME says offensive rhetoric like that of Mr KATTER and Ms HAGELIN has no place in debate
on same-sex marriage.

VIC:Nixon working on doco of his life
MELBOURNE, April 20 AAP - Controversial former AFL player manager Ricky Nixon is working
on a documentary about his life in the AFL that will include his involvement with the
St Kilda schoolgirl that led to his deregistration.
The Age says Nixon has teamed up with documentary maker Deanna Zacek and has already
been filmed extensively, but he remains undecided about whether he will let it go to air.
"It's still a decision I'm yet to make," Nixon told The Age.
Zacek emphasised that the documentary would cover the 30 years of Nixon's time in the
AFL world during which he managed a stable of football stars.
Zacek said there had already been discussions with television networks about the proposed
documentary.
Nixon was stripped of his agent's accreditation by the AFL Players Association in the
wake of allegations he had engaged in sex and drugs with a teenager in a hotel room.
Nixon has taken out a restraining order against the teenager, whom he met initially
when acting on behalf of his clients, St Kilda's Nick Riewoldt, Sam Gilbert and Nick Dal
Santo, after she posted nude images of the players on Facebook.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Internet, once a bankable marketing silver bullet for the film and music industry, is now a formidable foe.
Rampant online file sharing has cut deep into the pockets of businesses, industry players say, causing them to suffer losses running into millions of ringgit.
"Consumers worldwide are embracing digital media and changing the way they access entertainment. As a result, new technology has played a role in reducing the sales of optical discs," says Tan Ngiap Foo, chief executive officer of the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM).
The music industry is reportedly losing RM100 million a year to mobile phone shops selling illegally downloaded ringtones.
Similarly, the sale of local and international CDs and cassettes has been severely affected. In 1996, sales stood at RM315 million, but hit rock bottom three years ago at RM58 million.
In 1997, King of Pop Michael Jackson's album sales gave the figure a slight boost, but at RM71 million, it was still a far cry from the golden era of the 1990s.
Much of the decline in the early years was due to CD piracy, but the Internet has now become a far more serious threat, says artiste and RIM chairman Norman Abdul Halim.
He says Internet penetration in the country has gone up considerably, and the availability of high speed broadband has allowed Malaysians to download better quality contents faster.
"Digital technology creates opportunities, but can become a threat if it's uncontrolled."
The downloading of literary, musical or artistic works online without permission is an infringement of the Copyright Act 1987.
Lawmakers and industry players may label online piracy immoral and unlawful, but file sharing proponents described it as a phenomenon driven by "economics" and guided by "common sense".
One of them, Ramlee*, 33, reasoned: "If it's free, fast and easy - why not?"
Over the years, the Subang-based IT consultant has downloaded over 100 gigabyte of materials - including e-books, comics, market studies, hundreds of movies and thousands of songs - from various file-sharing systems, website forums and blogs.
"On a dollar-to-dollar comparison, CDs and DVDs are much cheaper in the United States than Malaysia. Original CDs are so expensive here. That's why people resort to downloading songs and movies online," he says.
Interior designer Cheng*, 40, concurs that prices make all the difference.
The father of four says an average cinema outing for the family will cost him at least RM150.
"Paying for movie tickets, fuel, parking charges, popcorn and drinks can be quite hard on the pocket for a big family. How often can we frequent the cinema when it's so expensive?"
For Ija*, a fan of US TV shows like Chuck and House, getting entertainment contents online has a huge advantage - the borderless world of the Internet facilitates an almost instantaneous transfer, by industry standards.
A show aired at night in New York would be posted online two hours later, and within half an hour of downloading, Ija would be able to watch the same episode.
"I haven't watched local TV networks for years because the series shown are so outdated."
The 36-year-old from the media IT sector, who started downloading contents more than 10 years ago, now has in his collection one tetrabyte worth of TV shows, movies and MP3s.
Security software firm Symantec Asia Pacific recently revealed that more than a third of Malaysian respondents of a survey think that it is "morally acceptable" to download a single music track, album or movie without paying.
However, the number of Malaysians who download online materials could well be higher, as there are net users who are aware that the act is illegal and unacceptable but proceed to do it anyway.
Chemical engineering student Josh*, 23, who watches movies through streaming media and downloads multiplayer computer games, says: "I know it's illegal. But since everyone is doing it, why not? Plus, movie studios make billions of dollars a year."
The self-professed supporter of local music, however, says he buys original CDs when it comes to local bands.
Kuala Lumpur-based Lee*, 23, cites convenience as online downloading's biggest draw. The law student says technology has made the transfer of content materials compatible and almost seamless.
"You can convert a song on Youtube into MP3 and then save it to your phone and music player like iPod. You can also store hundreds of songs in your thumb drive and listen to them on your computer or while you're driving.
"Conversely, if you buy a CD, it can only be played on a CD player. In this day and age, convenience matters a lot."
(* not his/her real name)
Three strikes, and you are out
WILL the days of online piracy soon be numbered?
After years of lobbying from the entertainment industry, last year the government proposed amending the Copyright Act 1987 to address Internet piracy.
The ISP Liablity Act, if passed, would give Internet service providers the power to control their bandwidth.
The Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) in particular has called for and support the "three-strikes" rule - that is, an accidental or deliberate infringer will be given three warning notices prior to their Internet connection being suspended, and eventually, terminated, if they are repeat infringers.
In Asia, Korea and Taiwan passed the "three-strikes" law in 2009.
"There is definitely a need for law and order. We can't go on good faith because it doesn't work," says Norman Abdul Halim, president and group CEO of KRU Studios.
On calls from consumers to lower the prices of CDs as a means to curb piracy, RIM chief executive officer Tan Ngiap Foo says the suggestion is "most ridiculous".
"Why is this suggestion to reduce prices only made to the music industry when costs are going up all around? The bottom line is that no matter how cheap music is sold, the pirate will always be able to sell cheaper - he doesn't pay the composers, lyricists, publishers, and for studios and equipment.
"Anyone holding this view is in fact supporting daylight robbery. It's akin to saying that a person deserves to be robbed because he lives in a nice house and drives a big car."
Norman says the problem lies in the mentality of consumers, and not in price.
"Consumers download for free. How can the music industry fight with free?
"Consumers have to be responsible when using the Net. They have to understand that content is a property, and its use cannot be violated."
Free downloads can open yourself up to cybercrime
MANY Malaysians think it is "morally acceptable" to download music and movies for free from the Internet, a report has revealed.
According to the report released by Symantec Asia Pacific recently, 36 per cent of Malaysians think it is okay to download a single music track, album or movie without paying.
Twenty per cent believe it is acceptable to secretly view someone else's browser history files and 12 per cent believe it is okay to check other people's emails.
These behaviours, such as downloading files, are worrying. Not only are such downloads illegal, it exposes people to security threats as cyber criminals lurk in places where people download illegal content and make use of these channels to distribute malware.
Cyber criminals raked in an average US$2,270 (RM7,300) from local Internet users, the report revealed.
With 83 per cent of Internet users falling for cybercrimes, the final amount could be higher, says its regional consumer product marketing manager David Hall.
"Cybercrimes have evolved and criminals are more organised, moving underground. They are faceless and they can be operating from any part of the world as the cyber world is borderless.
"Besides the monetary loss, becoming a victim of cybercrime can have a profound psychological effect, similar to losing a loved one. Victims are angry and embarrassed with what had happened to them," he adds.
"Many suffer in silence but there are those who take action by reporting the matter to the authorities," he says, quoting the report based on a methodology study conducted in the first quarter of last year.
Cybercrimes include computer viruses, online credit card fraud and identity theft, normally as a result of apathy on the part of consumers. This leaves them vulnerable and exposed in the online world.
"This is a silent digital epidemic and trying to solve cybercrime can be highly frustrating. For every cyber criminal caught, a large number go scot free.
The report from the security software maker also shows that though one in three Malaysians blames the criminals behind the cybercrime, one-third of Malaysians feel "highly responsible" for the cybercrime activities as they respond to online scams and phishing attacks.
"To be safe and protect yourself, Internet users should never give out personal information online. Never ever put too much information online.
"Some 78 per cent of Malaysian online users think that is okay to do so without realising that they can never restore or correct negative online reputation, while 22 per cent feels that it is bad to do so," says Hall.
He adds that people should realise that once the information is available online, it is difficult to take it down.
"Having said that, never be afraid of the Internet because it is a great place to learn things as it has so much information to offer. But be wise and protect yourself by changing your password regularly.
"Internet users can fight back and take control of things because you have the power to do so."
The Norton Cybercrime Report - Human Impact was conducted in Malaysia and other Asean countries in April last year.
Some 452 Internet users from the age of 18 were interviewed in the online survey.
The study was also conducted globally where 7,066 Internet users in 14 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, France, Germany, the United States and England, were interviewed.

FED:Robb confident of deal with independents
CANBERRA, Aug 22 AAP - Opposition frontbencher Andrew Robb is confident the federal
coalition can stitch up a deal with the independents that would avoid voters having to
go back to the polls.
At the close of counting at 2.00am (AEST) on Sunday the Australian Electoral Commission
had Labor and coalition each winning 71 seats with three independents and an Australia
Green.
Four other seats are too close to call.
"I am confident if we can put together a winning majority combination," Mr Robb told
ABC Television on Sunday.
He believes the independents will be intent on maintaining their contribution in the
political process.
"I am very confident that they will see, because they have the national interest at
heart, that we offer that stability."
Mr Robb said Opposition Leader Tony Abbott was the only party leader with a positive
agenda that could "govern competently tomorrow".
Labor divisions would be "unbelievable" because of recriminations about the dumping
of former prime minister Kevin Rudd for Julia Gillard.
The power struggles and payback would be of "enormous proportions".
"Labor is a recipe for instability in the future," he said, adding the party had lost
its legitimacy to govern."

Fed: Victoria remains defiantly opposed to health plan
By Sandra O'Malley, Senior Political Writer
CANBERRA, April 14 AAP - Victorian Premier John Brumby remains defiantly opposed to
Kevin Rudd's health and hospital reform plan, insisting he "cannot and will not" support
the changes.
An increasingly isolated Mr Brumby took his argument to the National Press Club on
Wednesday, suggesting a deal was possible on Monday - but not on Mr Rudd's terms.
"We've got a GST clawback that adds no new money to the system (and) we've got a health
system that's proposed to be run out of Canberra," Mr Brumby said.
"It is for those two fundamental reasons that Victoria cannot and will not support
the commonwealth proposal."
Mr Rudd will formally put his health offer to state and territory leaders at the Council
of Australian Governments (CoAG) on Monday - if he can't get agreement, he has threatened
to take the matter to a referendum.
He wants to take back 30 per cent of GST revenue from the states and, in return, the
commonwealth will take control of majority funding of public hospitals.
Mr Brumby has suggested an alternative 50:50 funding split - without the commonwealth
"stealing" the GST revenue, an initiative that stunned the premier when it was first announced.
"At no time, ever, ever, formally, informally, on the record, off the record, in meetings,
out of meetings, has there ever been any suggestion from the prime minister that they
would steal the GST from the states," he said.
Federal Labor's 2007 health policy states the assumption for Commonwealth funding of
public hospitals would "require a parallel reduction in Commonwealth outlays to the states
at territories".
However, Mr Brumby's office noted that in October 2007, Mr Rudd pledged to leave the
distribution of GST revenues to the independent Commonwealth Grants Commission.
The Victorian premier is the most trenchant critic of the commonwealth plan - his biggest
ally is Western Australia, the only Liberal government across the country.
Other states are inching towards the commonwealth.
Queensland is on board and South Australian Premier Mike Rann doesn't want Victoria
to spoil his state's chance for more money.
"This is a once in a generation opportunity ... for future growth in our hospitals
... we do not want to see it aborted by John Brumby or anybody else," Mr Rann told ABC
Radio.
NSW Premier Kristina Keneally, who met Mr Rudd at length on Tuesday night, urged all
parties to do "everything possible to get to an agreement".
With WA Premier Colin Barnett out of the country, Mr Brumby is a lone voice at the
moment and federal Labor is doing its best to paint him as anti-reform.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon urged Mr Brumby back to the negotiating.
"I think it's time for Mr Brumby to come back to the negotiating table," she said.
However, the Rudd government hasn't extended the invitation for a fortnight.
Mr Rudd hasn't met or spoken to Mr Brumby since March 31.
While Mr Brumby is resisting the current commonwealth plan, he thinks something can
be nutted out on April 19.
"I hope we can get an agreement around Monday but it's not going to be an agreement
around what the prime minister's put up," he said.
"We're going to have to meet, hopefully, somewhere in the middle."
He suggested it may be possible to get agreement "on principles" next week.
"Then it could be possible over the next four to six weeks for further discussions
to get the health policy right," Mr Brumby said.
One issue where Mr Rudd is looking lonesome is the idea of a single funding authority,
which most of the states, as well as doctors, want.
The Australian Medical Association urged CoAG to agree on a single model next Monday.

Fed: Anti-depressants make babies smaller, irritable
Eds: Embargoed until 0001 AEDT Saturday, December 1
By Tamara McLean, Medical Writer
MELBOURNE, Dec 1 AAP - Babies born to women on antidepressants are smaller and more
likely to suffer tremor and irritability, but the symptoms are not long-lasting, Australian
research shows.
Melbourne researchers say their study should reassure mums-to-be that remaining on
much-needed medication during pregnancy does not appear to cause lasting harm to their
child.
"The symptoms we found were essentially minor and they were gone within a month," said
lead researcher Dr Megan Galbally, from Melbourne's Mercy Hospital for Women.
The study, to be presented at the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) conference in
Melbourne today, tracked 34 women taking anti-depressant medication during their pregnancy
and the same number who did not.
"The babies exposed to anti-depressants were born a little bit earlier, a little bit
smaller and did seem to have more jitteriness, tremor, sneezing, irritability and gastro
symptoms," Dr Galbally said.
"These symptoms were gone within a month, however, and we didn't see any major complications
like deformations or anything."
The only effect noticed after a month were that these babies had slightly less weight
gain compared with those not exposed to the medications, probably because they fed poorly
in the first weeks of life, Dr Galbally said.
The level of symptoms appeared to correlate with the amount of medication taken by their mothers.
She said the results were reassuring but stressed that anti-depressant use in pregnancy
was not a straight-forward matter.
Some research had found links between the anti-depressant Aropax and birth defects.
However, two international studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine
in July were unable to find a link between the new generation selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant and birth defects or deformities.
There is a quandary because there has been strong research suggesting that 50 to 75
per cent of women who go off anti-depressants when they need them, will relapse.
Australian statistics show half of women go off the drugs without GP consultation when
they fall pregnant, a figure Dr Galbally said was concerning.
"For women who need them they are a really important part of treatment.
"Untreated maternal anxiety and depression can have risks in pregnancy and risks in
early childhood.
"But we don't want to expose babies unnecessarily so it really needs to be looked at
case by case and discussed with your doctor."

WILLIAMTOWN, NSW, April 18 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has farewelled one of the
first groups of servicemen about to be deployed to Afghanistan as part of Australia's
increased commitment to the war-torn country.
Members of the Air Combat Forces fly to Kandahar on Tuesday to take over the control
and surveillance of the airspace over Afghanistan.
The initial group of 27 will eventually swell to a 75 strong unit when it completely
takes over the role from the US forces in August.
The Australians will have authority over every aircraft in Afghan airspace and its environs.
"Every aircraft which gets airborne in Afghanistan will be under Australian control,"
said the unit's commanding officer Wing Commander Paul Turner.
Mr Howard paid tribute to the RAAF for the vital role it will be playing in disrupting
the Taliban in Afghanistan.
"The fact we will be providing radar capability as part of the increased Australian
deployment to Afghanistan is a tribute to the famous professionalism of the men and women
of the RAAF," Mr Howard told the members of the unit at the Williamtown air force base
near Newcastle.
"I thank you very, very much for everything you are doing for Australia".
The government announced last week it would deploy an extra 300 special forces soldiers
to southern central Afghanistan.

Tas: Firefighters fear for Bicheno if blaze hits national park
HOBART, Dec 17 AAP - Firefighters fear a blaze raging out of control in north-east
Tasmania could engulf the coastal town of Bicheno.
The fire has so far burnt out about 20,000 hectares and destroyed 17 homes to the north
of the Douglas Apsley National Park.
Tasmania Fire Service spokesman Danny Reid said if the bushfire crossed Elephant Pass
and spread to the park, it could prove unstoppable.
Mr Reid said firefighters had no means of containing the blaze if it entered the rugged
national park.
"The St Marys-Scamander fire is just ugly, it's burning in really rough, inhospitable
country, access is difficult," he said.
Residents in an area bordering the park between Elephant Pass and Bicheno have been
put on high alert, although milder conditions were cause for some optimism today.
Firefighters were working around the clock to reinforce containment lines before the
hot weather returned on Thursday, he said.
"Our firefighters can do wonders but they can't beat the weather, that's the problem."
Meanwhile the Kellevie fire, east of Hobart, remained stable today. Mr Reid said containment
lines now ringed the fire but only a good downpour would put it out.
"The heavy fuel in the middles of the containment lines will burn for days yet until
we get some significant rainfall."
The fire has blacked out 12,000 hectares. Almost 70 firefighters were on site today
back-burning along the north-eastern edge of the blaze.

Timms -- For ICT, think China!
M2 PRESSWIRE-5 July 2002-UK Government: Timms -- For ICT, think China! (C)1994-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:07052002
Stephen Timms, making his first overseas visit next week as E-commerce Minister to China and Hong Kong, today called for the UK's Information Communication Technology and e-commerce companies to consider China as a market with real potential and growth.
Stephen Timms was speaking just before his five days of talks with Chinese and Hong Kong Government and industry leaders.
He said: "China is rapidly becoming a digital dragon. It has the largest mobile phone market in the world with over 170 million subscribers.
Internet subscribers have risen by over 300% in the past year and its economic growth is over 7%. Last year UK ICT exports to China were worth almost GBP400m, over double the previous years exports."
"I think it is highly appropriate that my first overseas visit is to China. Following their entry to the World Trade Organisation, China is becoming more open for business. And our strength in areas such as electronic design, digital content, mobile communications and digital TV match the needs of the Chinese market."
Stephen Timms is visiting China from 7th to 12th July, travelling to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. During his visit he will be having talks with senior Chinese Ministers on ICT policy issues such as technology standards and will visit leading Chinese ICT companies to promote the UK as the ideal location for companies looking to enter the European market. He will also meet UK companies already investing in China. He continued: "We need to raise the profile of the UK ICT's sector in China. In some areas, such as mobile communications and digital TV technology, it is the UK and Europe who are world leaders. With our world class R&D base, our highly skilled labour and our competitive market, we are the ideal location for China's blossoming ICT industry. But we need to work hard to get this message home. "
Notes to Editors

TWA to offer wireless Internet access; Partnership will bring BlueStreak branded Bluetooth Technology to sites across the TWA system.
M2 PRESSWIRE-13 June 2000-TWA: TWA to offer wireless Internet access; Partnership will bring BlueStreak branded Bluetooth Technology to sites across the TWA system (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:06122000
ST. LOUIS -- Imagine you are taking a much-needed respite at the TWA Ambassadors Club in the few minutes before your flight to New York for that career-making meeting. You don't have the time to mess with the wires and hunting down an outlet, but you really need that important information that your colleague promised to e-mail. Then you remember - it's fall of 2000 and TWA Ambassadors Clubs are now equipped with wireless internet connection using BluetoothTM technology. You boot up and you are instantly online - no muss, no fuss - and you get your email with minutes to spare before your flight.
Trans World Airlines, Inc. today announced a partnership that will bring Nomad Networks' BlueStreakTM wireless internet access to TWA Ambassadors Clubs beginning this fall. Using the new technology and Bluetooth-equipped laptop computers, visitors will be able to log on to the internet from anywhere in the club, without connecting to a power outlet or a telephone.
"The first Ambassadors Clubs to go wireless will be in St. Louis and at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia International Airport in New York City, and we should have every Club in the system "live" by January of 2001," announced Scott Bush, TWA's vice president - sales and distribution. "We chose to work with Nomad Networks because we share a vision of more productive and convenient business travel." "Nomad Networks' BlueStreak service offers compelling advantages over the other wireless technologies on the market," said Jack Leber, Chief Executive Officer for Nomad Networks. "The Nomad Networks service also works with PDAs and Palm Pilots, as well as laptop computers - making our technology infinitely more useful for business travelers." Bluetooth is a revolutionary new radio chip developed through a collaboration of the computing and communications industries.
It allows electronic devices like cell phones, laptops, and PDAs, to "talk" to other Bluetooth-enabled products, eliminating the need for cables or infrared beams. More than 2000 manufacturers are developing Bluetooth products, and it is estimated that by 2002 this new technology will be built into hundreds of millions of electronic devices. A Bluetooth PC card that will allow existing laptops to connect to this service will also be available this fall.
TWA and Nomad Networks are bringing this technology to TWA Ambassadors Clubs and TWA gates across the TWA system, starting with Ambassadors Clubs in St. Louis and at JFK Airport in New York City this fall. TWA and Nomad Networks also expect to eventually enable TWA gates with the new technology.

Horizon's recently introduced organic juices also contributed more than a half-million dollars to fourth quarter sales growth. "Our organic citrus juices' reception is very encouraging," said Feinblum. "Juice sales were higher than anticipated, making their first full quarter in the market very successful."
Feinblum also noted that Joe Langley, a twenty-year sales and marketing professional, formerly with the Dannon Company, has been appointed vice president of sales. Langley succeeds Horizon cofounder Mark Retzloff, who will direct the Company's strategies regarding acquisitions and strategic partnerships in the new position of senior vice president, corporate development.

Capgemini and Microsoft Plan to Offer Accelerated Cloud Services in 22 Countries: Dutch Police Adopt Windows Azure Solution Architected by Capgemini to Provide a Secure Roadmap for Innovation.(Company overview)
M2 PRESSWIRE-July 19, 2011-: Capgemini and Microsoft Plan to Offer Accelerated Cloud Services in 22 Countries: Dutch Police Adopt Windows Azure Solution Architected by Capgemini to Provide a Secure Roadmap for Innovation(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
RDATE:19072011
Paris, -- Capgemini Group, one of the world's foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services, and Microsoft Corp. announce a global plan that will bring the expertise of Capgemini's consulting, technology and outsourcing services to help deploy customer solutions on the Windows Azure platform.
As part of the agreement, Capgemini will market and deliver services around Windows Azure , Microsoft's cloud platform, mobilizing Capgemini's full lifecycle capabilities in orchestrating, designing, developing and running cloud-based application services.
As a business priority for both firms, the joint plan will offer Windows Azure solutions across 22 countries with a first focus on the UK, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, France, Belgium and Brazil. There will be targeted market offers across sectors including financial services, the public sector and energy & utilities. The Windows Azure platform delivers highly cost-effective development and deployment options on a flexible platform that offers increased speed to market. The joint plan will also provide advice to businesses on how to develop a cohesive, enterprise-class cloud strategy, giving new alternatives to deal with legacy and M&A challenges. Capgemini will furthermore work with Microsoft as an ecosystem coordinator among software providers that have created solutions on the Windows Azure platform for specific markets.
" Capgemini already has a very strong alliance with Microsoft and this further strengthens our relationship. We have a long history of customer collaboration and deep sector specific expertise and Microsoft offers innovative solutions to meet customer needs in the quickly growing domain of the cloud. Together we are well positioned to deliver cloud services that will help customers keep ahead of the technology curve, while at the same time reducing costs, " said John Brahim, Capgemini's Application Services Europe Deputy CEO.
Capgemini and Microsoft will jointly invest in sales, technical training and various marketing activities. Together the firms have agreed to produce a future global study into the issues of data quality, security and sovereignty in the cloud. Capgemini will also: Train 1,500 architects and developers globally on the Windows Azure platform Develop a dedicated offshore center of expertise through building up the Windows Azure Center of Excellence in Mumbai, India Migrate selected solutions to the Windows Azure platform Actively drive ecosystems of third-party suppliers of Windows Azure-based solutions in targeted sectors
Joint customers including the Dutch police are already piloting the Windows Azure platform, backed with services by Capgemini.
"Our mutual customers will benefit from this joint plan with Capgemini to offer flexible cloud business solutions to customers through the Windows Azure platform," said Doug Hauger, General Manager for Windows Azure at Microsoft. "The Windows Azure platform minimizes the need for infrastructure investments. Applications developed on Windows Azure can be deployed rapidly with the reliability and security that's essential for the enterprise. Microsoft is committed to continued investment in cloud solutions, and will work with Capgemini to facilitate the deployment of cloud solutions for customers around the world."
Mr. Willem Broer, Program Director VPK, from the Dutch Police: " Police officers identified a gap between police legacy systems and the growing trend for app stores and cloud computing. To counter this, we wanted to transition to a cloud-based model for better information sharing, both internally and externally. Capgemini has been our partner for designing the architectural framework (both long and short term solutions) in order to decide upon a roadmap for innovation. To connect our legacy systems with new web parts, Microsoft's Windows Azure was a trusted choice for our technology management program. The program, called 'Virtual Police Service' (VPS), is aimed at a new style of policing, making use of the latest tools for analyzing data and apps for supporting daily routine. Policemen can use mobile devices to facilitate knowledge sharing and practical communication via private and public networks. The Internet portal is currently being piloted among police, safety professionals and civilians in order to support a multi-agency approach. Because safety is an issue for the whole society an important part is the introduction of citizen support tools, so citizens can use apps to help the government in controlling and combating organized crime. "

Erdogan in eavesdropping row ahead of Turkish vote.
Summary: Evidence of electronic eavesdropping on a political party just over a week before an election has given opposition leaders ammunition to question the state of Turkey's democracy under Prime MinisterRecep Tayyip Erdogan.
ISTANBUL: Evidence of electronic eavesdropping on a political party just over a week before an election has given opposition leaders ammunition to question the state of Turkey's democracy under Prime MinisterRecep Tayyip Erdogan.
Controversy flared around Erdogan ahead of June 12 elections after he said earlier this week that opposition parties were ganging up to stop his AK Party from winning more seats in the Kurdish southeast, and that a recording would be released to prove it.
"I think the voice recordings will be published today or tomorrow," Erdogan said in a televised campaign speech in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir Wednesday. The recordings were released Thursday.
The frank admission of foreknowledge stunned some political commentators in a country where many people avoid talking on the phone about politics for fear that someone is listening in.
"I was frozen for a moment when I heard him say this on television," Murat Yetkin wrote in Radikal newspaper Friday. "The prime minister was announcing a recording of a conversation between two members of another political party and was saying it would be released on the Internet soon," Yetkin said in a column that drew parallels with the Watergate scandal that brought down U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1974.
The recording at the center of the row allegedly caught two members of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Part discussing plans for strategic voting by BDP supporters to help a rival nationalist party stop the AK winning more seats in the Elazig constituency.
The BDP is regularly accused of links to Kurdish militants.
The leader of the center-left main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) seized on the recording to attack what he called "a wiretapping government" and Erdogan.
"You are the prime minister. How can you face the people and tell them an illegal recording is being released?" asked CHP chief Kemal Kilicdaroglu during an election rally in Bartin Thursday.
One of the BDP officials, whose voice was said to have been recorded, insisted there had been no such conversation and the tape was a fake created by intelligence agents working for Erdogan.
Meanwhile, Turkey's Air Force Academy commander was jailed early Friday with three other officers charged with seeking to overthrow the government in a 2003 plot in which more than 200 officers are accused.
After three hours of questioning, an Istanbul court ordered Air Force Aacademy commander Major General Ismail Tas, two colonels and a lieutenant be sent to a military jail in the city, state-run Anatolian news agency reported.
Earlier this week General Bilgin Balanli, commander of Turkey's military academies, became the highest-ranking serving officer among those charged with involvement in the alleged conspiracy, dubbed "Operation Sledgehammer."
Twelve serving generals have now been arrested over the plot, which purportedly included plans to bomb historic mosques in Istanbul and trigger conflict with Greece. Defendants say the documents presented by the prosecution were part of a war game scenario used in a military seminar and that other documents were faked.

At the end Of the day, it's the hotel owners who have to pay the bills, and that was tough in 2010. For some, loans coming due presented problems; for others, operating revenue still wasn't enough to offset costs. But the tides are turning. As hotel occupancies began to turn the corner this spring, owners noticed improving numbers for their portfolio of operating hotels.
"Higher occupancies will allow us to raise prices," said George Johnson, president and CEO of Johnson Development Co. "The hospitality pipeline is essentially empty at this point, with very few new projects in the works. Consequently, higher demand with limited supply will lead to pricing power."
Trends
* Internet marketing and social networking will drive success in 2011.
* Rates will remain flat next year, depending on regional market supply.
* Overall, less supply and more demand will drive some rate increases.
* Financing for new projects and refinancing remains a challenge.
* Operational cost-cutting still needs to happen.
Michael Tetterton, president, Home-Towne Suites
What are the top three trends that will shape your business success in 2011?
The public opinion of what the out-of-touch idiots in D.C. and this administration are doing is the top trend that will shape my business. If the Democrats continue to do the same things [they have done] in the past two years, small businesses will not have the confidence needed and will be slower to crank back up. If they start acting with fiscal responsibility and make permanent changes for the good of small businesses, that will give [us] confidence.
What's your take on the average daily rate debate?
Hotels will continue to make small improvements with a huge desire to grow rate more. However, the growth will be smaller as hotels ease rates up cautiously, ensuring they do not push rates over the point where occupancy takes a loss. What we should expect over the next 2 years is more share-shifting back to the correct categories.... The public has not taken advantage of the rate decline as much as they have taken advantage of higher-end hotels with more amenities for the same cost.

Greg Schahet,
CFO, Schahet Hotels
What was the biggest challenge facing owners in 2010? The biggest challenge for us in 2010 was similar to what we faced in 2009--growing top-line revenue. 2010 has been better, but 2009 was so bad we still need to grow revenue. This is easier said than done because everyone else is in the same position, so competition is fierce.
What are the top three trends that will shape your business success in 2011?
* Internet and social marketing
* Expense management
* Going green
What do you know now that you wish you knew a year ago?
The world is not coming to an end. We survived and as a general rule going forward, when good times return we need to put more away to prepare for the bad.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Deno Yiankes,
president and CEO, investments and development division, White Lodging Services Corp.
What will be the biggest challenge facing owners in 2011? On the operational side, the primary focus will be on 'fixing the mix,' meaning we need to selectively wean off/reduce the discounted and negotiated rate channels and replace it with higher-rated, more profitable room nights. On the capital side, we are already seeing lenders re-enter the market; however, they are remaining very cautious.
What's your take on the average daily rate debate?
New, purpose-built hotels are typically the market share and rate winners coming out of a downturn as guests always flock to quality. Owners that reinvested to renovate will also be among the first to experience a pricing power rebound.
What do you know now that you wish you knew a year ago? The speed and quantity of the equity markets' rebound was certainly something I did not foresee a year ago.
Mark Williams, director of training and development, Coakley & Williams
What was the biggest challenge facing owners in 2010? Debt and paying bills and mortgages. The problem is that revenue has been down because of the economic collapse. Demand went down, which affected rates, and ultimately cash flow was affected.
What are the top three trends that will shape your business success in 2011?
* Keeping current clients loyal and happy
* Maximizing all the opportunities with sales and marketing
* Carefully controlling cost
